HISTORY OF CALVARY BAPTIST CHURCH
1949 – 1999

1949

Mrs. J. K. Lewis started Sunday School in home.

October, 1949 G. W. Philipps - First Baptist organized Mission Sunday School to be called East London Mission.  By November average attendance was 32.  By July, 1950 enrollment was 80.  Four years in home.
1953 Bought dwelling house next door and had an open house on October 25, 1953, with 116 present - changed name to McWhorter Street Mission.
1958 Built Sunday School rooms and small auditorium - (Ladies Sunday school room).
April 26, 1959 Organized into church with 43 Charter Members.      Calvary Baptist called Rev. Earl Abbott as pasted.  He stayed 3      years.
1961 Built our present auditorium approximately 150.
1974 Built an 18 foot addition.  Built 3 Sunday School rooms over old original auditorium.  Made Sunday School room in basement using fellowship hall.
1976

Bought 41/2 acres - Voted for Adult #4 Class to build Family Life Center.

1983 Built 3 rooms and finished stage for Sunday School rooms.
